When people think about elections that matter, they usually think about presidential races. But if you care about your Second Amendment rights, the midterm elections deserve just as much attention, and this year is no exception.
Every midterm election determines control of the entire U.S. House, one-third of the Senate, and, in many states, the governor’s office, attorney general, state legislature, and even judicial seats. These elected officials make many of the decisions that directly affect firearm laws and constitutional rights.
As gun policy has increasingly shifted to the states, governors and state lawmakers are deciding whether to adopt:
• Permit-to-purchase requirements
• Bans on certain semiautomatic firearms
• Magazine capacity limits
• Expanded red flag laws
• Mandatory safe-storage requirements
• Restrictions on unserialized firearms
The stakes extend beyond the states. While the 2024 Republican Party platform continues to affirm the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, the 2024 Democratic Party platform identifies gun violence prevention as a legislative priority. Notably, unlike previous years, the 2024 Democratic Party platform no longer includes language affirming an individual’s right to keep and bear arms.
The growing influence of far-left democratic socialists is also reshaping the debate over gun rights. For example, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supports an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, red flag laws, and magazine restrictions. She also endorsed Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, who previously declared, “We need to ban all guns,” before later advocating for a nationwide assault weapons ban and additional gun control measures. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) published an article in which the author argued that “the only way to guarantee that we will dramatically reduce acts of violence involving guns is to remove guns from society” and called for repealing the Second Amendment.
None of this is decided in a vacuum. It’s decided by who shows up to vote, and midterm turnout is historically much lower than presidential turnout. That gap means every gun owner’s vote carries outsized weight this cycle. A single state legislative race, decided by a few hundred votes, can determine whether your state passes new restrictions or protects the rights you already have.
